Hailstorms and wet shoes
25.04.2011
I know that this may be an odd place to start my account of what I've been up to since I left Chongqing on April 16. to go to Tibet and Nepal. I will catch up on what I did in Tibet, once I get back to Chongqing, I simply didn't have the time while travelling in Tibet, and when I had time I was in places that hardly had electricity, not to speak of internet.
I have just arrived in Bhaktapur, about an hour out of Kathmandu, after having trekked for 2,5 day from Sundarijal, via Chisapani to Nargakot and then here to Bhaktapur. The trekking was okay, pretty hard on the knees as it was mostly either uphill or downhill, with very little flat ground. Despite that we covered a little over 19km the first day, 22km the second day and 10km today. And to make matters even more fun we had to trek 4 hours through a hail storm yesterday. For us it just meant that we got wet and cold, but for the local farmers it was worse as about 50% of their harvest was flattened.
Those of you who have tried on my glasses will probably testify to the fact that I do not have the best sight in the world, and that sight was put to the test in the hail/rain storm as I couldn't see anything with my glasses on or off; which meant I walked straight into a 15cm deep hail and water pool, completely soaking my shoes - in which I then had to walk another 2 hours...by the time we reached Nargakot my toes were a little cold, but I was happy, cos what else is there to do...
This morning the weather have cleared up, and the sun is shining yet again and I am on my way to explore the old town in Bhaktapur.
Tomorrow it's back to Kathmandu, and the day after tomorrow I'll go to Chitwan NP.
Best, Eva Maria
