Business and patriotism
04.11.2010
The Consul is currently in Denmark on business, so currently it's Jacob (the other intern) and me who have to represent Denmark and its glory, whenever the Danish Consulate is asked to participate in any event.
This second day of the business forum was advertised as the time where we would get down to business, but we never really got there. There were some speeches (which I helped my translator translate from Chinese to English - she was a really nice girl, but her English was not good) and some signing ceremonies. Whereafter we could mingle a little bit with the other entrepreneurs, but the all wanted investments from Denmark (which I could not promise) or to buy wheat (which I do not sell) so all in all I was a little disappointed with what I acheived, but very pleased with the experience as a whole.
At 11.30 it was time for lunch and by 11.35 all the dishes were empty.
After lunch a trip to Deng Xiao Ping's homestead was planned, I participated in it expecting it to be a very Chinese experience - and it was. Deng's homestead is one of the mandatory stops on the "Red Tourism"-route in China, a route mostely travelled by Chinese.
The entire area around the house where he grew up has been converted into a park, where Chinese dignitaries come to plant trees. There are three sights in the park, the bronze statue of Deng, his house and the quite large museum.
The museum had surprisingly good English captioning, but was currated quite poorly (really I am not interested in seing Deng's magnifying glass or his every-day mug!) but that's China and apparently Chinese currating customs, as I have seen these types of exhibitions all over China.
From Deng's homestead the bus went back to Chongqing, where we arrived 2½ hours before we were supposed to, but then I got stuck in the rush-hour traffic for the coming 30 min.
Well, good thing that it is Friday.
Have a great weekend.
Best, Eva Maria
